Private Discovery Tours has exclusive access to Mount Earnslaw Station, a 130-year-old working farm set in the spectacular alpine environment of the Paradise Valley at the head of Lake Wakatipu.
The High Country Discovery Tour takes you on a half – day adventure over Mount Earnslaw Station, in the heart of New Zealand’s high country.
You will gain real insight into country life in this remote region, LOTR and the Hobbit movie locations can be viewed and there are walking options to secluded vantage points for the ultimate photograph.
4WD across farmland to Lake Reid where Black Swans and Paradise ducks live all year round and trout bask in the shallow waters.
There is the option to visit an operational woolshed where in season 1500 sheep are shorn in a day.
Then we visit Diamond Lake flanked by Mt Alfred and Mt Earnslaw (2830m) the views across the lake to Mt Chaos, Cosmos and Pluto Peaks are “Postcard shots in Paradise”.
Continuing through the Paradise Valley we pass Arcadia Homestead and view in the distance LOTR Isengard movie location, the forest of Lothlorien and from the Hobbit Beorn’s House. Note there are no film sets remaining in this area simply natural beauty.

No visit to the area is complete without a visit to Glenorchy village first surveyed in 1864, fluctuating in numbers over the years with activities including gold mining, sawmilling, scheelite mining, farming and more recently film making with what may be the smallest library in the world.
