Paradise Discovery Tour

Exclusive access to a working high country station, private or small group.

Glenorchy and Paradise Tour from Queenstown

Our Paradise Discovery Tour from Queenstown follows the edge of Lake Wakatipu to Glenorchy, then onto Mt Earnslaw Station, a working high country sheep and beef farm that has run continuously for over 130 years. Private Discovery Tours holds the only tour access onto it, so a stop most operators can only point at from the road is one you drive onto.

From the station we continue to the Mt Alfred Terraces, a private station track, not a public trail, passing the Isengard filming location on the way, then leave the rest of the day open: the Routeburn Nature Walk, a stroll at Lake Sylvan, the Dart River Jet Safari, horse riding or ziplining as a paid extra. Book it privately for your own group, or join a small group departure capped at eight, never sold as a coach tour.

Guests walking the Mt Alfred Terraces track above a braided river valley

The drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy

We leave Queenstown at 9:00am and follow the edge of Lake Wakatipu toward Glenorchy, first surveyed in 1864, on one of the more scenic stretches of road in the region, with peaks rising straight out of the lake the whole way. There’s one bend in the road that opens up to picture postcard scenery and it’s stunning every time – even for us. Your guide talks through the area’s history as you go: early settlement, gold mining, farming, and the film crews who worked here before moving on.

Exclusive access to Mt Earnslaw Station

From Glenorchy we turn onto Mt Earnslaw Station, a working high country sheep and beef farm that has run continuously for over 130 years. Private Discovery Tours holds the only tour access onto it. You travel by 4WD across active farmland and finish the farm section at the operational woolshed: real stock, real work, not something set up for visitors.

You are on land the public cannot enter, at a stop with none of the road-side crowding Glenorchy gets in peak season, and your guide can point out what’s happening on the farm as you cross it.

The Mt Alfred Terraces walk

From the station we continue by 4WD around the far side of Mt Alfred, on a private scenic road beside the braided Dart River, to the start of the Mt Alfred Terraces walk. It climbs a farm track, not a public trail, for about 1,500 metres and 100 metres of elevation, roughly 1.5 hours return, to views over the whole Paradise Valley. As this is a privately booked experience, the walk can be done at your own pace and shortened if needed. It isn’t a walk for anyone with limited walking ability or a bad back.

Your afternoon: Routeburn, Lake Sylvan or the Dart River Jet

By early afternoon we’re back in the publicly accessible part of the valley, and the rest of the day is yours to choose. Take the Routeburn Nature Walk, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, for 40 to 60 minutes return through native forest. Prefer something gentler? The Lake Sylvan track covers similar ground at an easier pace. Or add the Dart River Jet Safari, a two-hour jet boat run through the braided river system, at $399 per adult and $299 per child.

Private tour or small group departure

Book Paradise Discovery privately and the vehicle and guide are yours alone, with no set limit on numbers, up to 11 per vehicle. For a more intimate shared experience, join a small group departure instead: a maximum of eight guests, with no more than four guests per vehicle. These departures are never sold as bus tours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the farm access exclusive?

Yes. Mt Earnslaw Station is a private working farm and Private Discovery Tours holds the only tour access to this working farm. It isn’t open to the general public.

What is Mt Earnslaw Station?

A working high country sheep and beef farm that has run continuously for over 130 years. You travel across it by 4WD, finishing at the operational woolshed.

How much walking is there?

Two walks, up to about 2.5 hours total. The main one, at the Mt Alfred Terraces, is 1.5 hours return with 100 metres of elevation on a private station track. It can be shortened if required.

Is access to all paddocks available during lambing season?

During lambing season (typically late September to early November), access to some paddocks may be restricted to avoid disturbing the sheep and their newborn lambs. We ask all visitors to respect these temporary restrictions to help us protect the animals and give them a peaceful environment. Alternative routes may be used where necessary, and we appreciate your understanding.

What happens in the afternoon?

You choose: the Routeburn Nature Walk, the Lake Sylvan track, or the Dart River Jet Safari as a paid extra.

Is lunch included?

Yes, a picnic lunch and bottled water are included.

Can we do this tour as a shared departure instead of private?

Yes. Shared departures run from a minimum of two guests, four per vehicle and capped at eight total, at $600 per adult and $420 per child. This tour runs in a Prado, so a shared group of more than four needs a second vehicle.

What's the difference between the private and shared options?

On a private tour, the vehicle and guide are yours alone, with no set limit, up to 11 per vehicle. A shared departure is priced per person at the same rate as an additional private guest, four to a vehicle and capped at eight guests total. The farm access and the walk are the same either way.

Is the Dart River Jet Safari included in the price?

No, it’s a paid extra: $399 per adult and $299 per child, for a two-hour jet boat run through the Dart River.

What time do we leave and get back?

We pick up at 9:00am from your Queenstown accommodation, and are usually back around 5:00pm. If it suits you better, we can also start at 10:00am from Glenorchy.

How many people can come?

Up to 11 on a private tour, with the first three included in the price with each extra guest charged individually. Shared departures are capped at eight guests total, four per vehicle — this tour runs in a Prado, so a second vehicle joins for a bigger shared group.

Is it suitable for children or older guests?

Not suitable for children under 5 — the 4WD section of the drive is uncomfortable for young kids. Beyond that it isn’t suitable for anyone with limited walking ability or a bad back, given the terrain on the Mt Alfred Terraces walk.

If booked privately, can we adjust the day?

Yes, when booked privately you can customise the day to your needs.

Can we skip the farm tour?

Yes, on a private booking. Swap it out for more time on the nature walk and a private walk of your own pace, then add the Dart River Jet Safari in the afternoon.

What should we bring?

Sturdy, closed-toe footwear, warm and waterproof or windproof layers, a hat, sun cream and insect repellent, and a small day pack. A reasonable level of fitness is needed for walking.

We highly recommend Lucy! She was such a friendly driver and shared so much amazing local culture and highlights along the way. She took us to the private farm to see cattle and sheep, and walked us through how sheep shearing works in real life. The hiking route she picked was perfect — not too hard, not too easy. She also taught us loads about the native bush and trees. It was such an unforgettable experience with her!

The bespoke hike Sarah and her team put together for us was great. Combining 4 separate walks we saw lakes mountains and much more. Thank you! Lucy and Lee were fantastic on the hike and shared their local history and botanical knowledge with us. Could not have asked for a better day for a team bonding hike. Thank you.

We had Lucy Snelgrove as our tour guide for a private hike on the route burn trail and she was amazing 🙂 we came from the US and didn’t have rain jackets. Knowing it would be rainy, she had extra jackets and ponchos for us, made our hike sooo much more enjoyable! She kept a great pace and was very knowledgeable about the trail, plants and birds we saw along the way. Would very highly recommend!! We had some extra time and instead of bringing us back to our hotel right away, she went out of the way to bring us to some more view points to check out the beautiful scenery.

My wife and I spent a fantastic day in Paradise Valley, guided by Charles. A journey through fairytale locations. Now we understand why The Lord of the Rings was filmed here. We come from a big city. Unspoiled places like those we saw today, where the sound of silence and the absence of people reign supreme, are a unique opportunity. Charles showed us places that are technically impossible to reach on our own. Breathtaking views, views of the lake, mountains with snow-capped peaks, forests, valleys... it's almost impossible to describe the details. Even the photographs don't do the reality justice. Congratulations to Charles, thank you very much.

My wife and I had a full day Milford Sound tour with Charles. We could not have scripted a more perfect day of travel. Of course, the trip to Milford Sound was fantastic. The journey itself was great—we stopped at a ton of viewing points, one more beautiful than the next. And I really don’t have words to describe how impossibly beautiful Milford Sound itself is. But it was Charles who truly tied this day together and made it so memorable. Charles is everything you’d want in a travel guide—knowledgeable, interesting, and an amazing conversationalist. He also is just the consummate professional: the day was perfectly timed so that we were constantly doing things without ever feeling rushed. My wife and I have had an amazing time in Queenstown. Seriously, if we had any more time here, what we would do would be an absolute no-brainer: book another tour with Charles. In sum, I can’t recommend Charles more highly. A class act.

Charles Fraser was the ultimate professional guide. He was totally knowledgeable & informative on all aspects of New Zealand. He knew so much about the country, its culture, its people, and the history. We spent two days with him & had a most memorable time hiking & exploring Milford Sound & the countryside of New Zealand. He is remarkably upbeat & happy and you feel like you’ve known him forever. He made a most favorable impression on us, and made the day’s exciting. We will never forget his graciousness. We highly suggest hiring him and his company to experience the very best of New Zealand.
