The Catlins…the best kept secret for wildlife in New Zealand
Competing for visitor interest for many years the Catlins region is now coming of age…Milford Sound is great, dynamic and worth a visit but be prepared to be there with many others who visit this world acclaimed National Park especially in the summer months.
If seeing wildlife in its habitat is your emphasis then the Catlins region with numerous marine mammals, rare yellow eyed penguins and marine birdlife is an essential visit. Stay over for a night there are no 5 star hotels but there are very friendly places bed & breakfasts, houses or motels.
This is a great way to combine travel around the Southern region : Dunedin, the Catlins, Te Anau and then Milford Sound (if you insist) or why not try the less populated Doubtful Sound.
You can also do this in reverse direction starting in Queenstown.
